The original Lycksele covers are a mix of recycled Polyester, cotton and modacrylic, a strong and long-lasting material that will provide many years of use.
What material should you choose when it comes to a replacement cover? There are multiple to choose from, and all serve different purposes.
The ideal sofa cover would offer the ultimate comfort, be soft and luxurious, warm in winter and cool in summer while being stain-proof, fur proof, easy to clean and long-lasting.
Unfortunately, this material doesn’t exist. Although you can get close to the ideal material, all differ somewhat and are better for certain situations and uses.
All Round Sofa Cover Materials
All Round sofa materials are comfortable, retain their colour, are ok to clean and have a reasonable degree of durability. They include.
Polyester ticks all the boxes. That’s why it’s the primary material for most IKEA sofas, the perfect all-around material that will work in any home.
Microfibre is an excellent all-around material. It is, however, more durable and hard-wearing than standard Polyester. In addition, Microfibre is a mix of Polyester and Nylon and is generally easier to clean. On the other hand, Microfibre is rougher than standard Polyester, so some comfort is sacrificed.
Both Polyester and Microfibre will likely require a rubber brush or vacuuming to remove animal fur.
Tough Sofa Materials
Tough materials are for sofas that get lots of use. They are highly resistant to wear and tear and animals claws. Tough materials also don’t absorb spillages and are easy to clean.
Denim and Canvas are both rigid, tightly woven kinds of cotton. They both have a certain degree of roughness but are generally comfortable and look good.
Nylon is highly resistant to stains and spillages and is very good at retaining its colour and not fading over time. However, nylon is usually at the bottom of the pile regarding comfort.
Fur is straightforward to clean on Denim, Canvas and Nylon sofas.
Wipe Clean Sofa Materials
Wipe Clean Sofa covers are ideal if you have children and pets as spillages, stains, and animal fur just wiped off.
Leather is the ultimate wipe-clean material. It’s a dream to sit on and provides a warming effect in winter.
Vinyl is a more cost-effective wipe-clean sofa material cheaper than leather and usually lasts longer.
Luxury Sofa Materials
The luxury materials are softer than the all-around, and the tough materials are, however, not as hard-wearing.
The linen is soft and light, a highly luxurious material. However, care must be taken as it can wear quickly, and spillages and stains are harder to remove.
Velvet is a soft material. It’s more challenging and easier to clean than linen but doesn’t have the same luxury softness.
Cotton is an excellent material. It’s softer than Polyester and Microfibre and tougher than linen and velvet. However, cotton can be problematic to clean, depending on the type of spillage.
