Ikea Karlstad Sofa Covers come with Polyester covers that are made to last a long time.
When your cover wears out, you can replace it with another Polyester cover or a cover of a different material.
Alternatively, you can buy a new Karlstad chair and upgrade the cover immediately.
In a single stroke, you can make your Karlstad Sofa more comfortable, better suited to your living room and decore, child and pet resistant or easier to clean.
All you have to do is choose a suitable material based on your requirements.
If you’re a tidy person who never spills food or drinks on your sofa without young children and pets, you can get away with any material.
If you eat and drink on your sofas and expect the odd spillage, you will want to choose a material that’s easy to clean. Before you say, “we’ll never spill anything on our sofa”, remember it doesn’t matter until it does. The easier to clean the material, the safer your cover is regarding accidents.
If you have children, easy-to-clean covers are preferable as children will always have accidents, the general rule of thumb is the younger your children, the easier to clean the cover you want.
Pet fur attaches to some materials while it falls off others. Therefore, consider your material carefully if you have pets, especially if you sit/sleep on your sofa.
Some cats like to claw sofas. If you have a cat that likes to claw, pick a hard-wearing material that won’t show the claw marks.
Sofas that are sat on all day and every day will wear out quicker than sofas that are sat on in the evenings or weekends only, pick the material accordingly.
The Materials
So which material should you choose? This list will help you decide.
Polyester
Polyester is the standard material for off-the-shelf Karlstad sofas, good quality with high abrasion resistance and colour longevity. Polyester doesn’t absorb stains and is easy to clean. However, some effort is required to remove pet fur from Polyester materials.
Canvas
Canvas is tough, highly resistant to claw marks and densely woven, so easy to clean in the event of a spillage.
Cotton
Cotten is exceptionally comfortable, fade-resistant and durable. However, it absorbs spillages and isn’t the easiest to clean unless you put the cover in the washing machine.
Linen
Linen is a light, airy, soft and luxurious material. Get Linen if you want the ultimate in comfort. Avoid if you have pets or children. Linen is problematic to clean.
Leather
Leather is effortless to clean as spillages and fur are not absorbed and are wiped off easily. Leather is very durable, it can get sticky in hot weather, and claw marks and scratches are noticeable. If you can’t afford leather, consider Vinyl, another durable, easy-to-clean material cheaper than leather.
Microfibre
Microfibre is an excellent comfortable material that’s durable, stain-resistant and easy to clean. However, pet fur does stick to the microfibre and can be difficult to remove.
Nylon
Nylon is very durable and resistant to staining. Not the most comfortable of materials and can feel a bit scratchy, which is easily remedied with cushions and throws. Nylon holds its colour well and will last many years. A good choice for sofas that get a lot of use by adults, children and pets.
Velvet
Velvet is soft and luxurious. It doesn’t absorb stains. It’s easy to remove pet fur from and straightforward to clean.
